Mouse Button Release Test

This mouse button release test records how long each press lasts. Press and release the left button at your normal rhythm; a healthy switch produces a tight cluster, a worn one scatters and throws coral outliers.

    Measure hold time properly

    1. 1. Click naturally

Do not try to be fast or slow. The test is about consistency, not speed.

    2. 2. Watch the bars

Even bars mean a steady switch. Spikes or very short bars are suspicious.

    3. 3. Repeat on another mouse

A good switch shows a spread under 25 percent of the average.

    What the duration tells you

    Release bounce

A press shorter than 8 ms is physically impossible for a finger; it is the switch chattering.

    Spread as a health score

Standard deviation relative to the mean is the single best indicator of wear.

    Outlier highlighting

Durations far outside the cluster are coloured coral in the history.

    Pairs with the double-click test

Double-click catches press bounce; this catches release bounce.

    Hold time terms

    Press duration
Time between the switch closing and opening for one click.
    Standard deviation
A measure of spread. Small means consistent.
    Release bounce
Contacts chattering as they separate, which can register as extra clicks.
    Switch wear
Gradual loss of spring tension and contact quality over millions of clicks.

    Hold time questions

What is a normal press duration?

60 to 120 ms for a relaxed click. Gamers often sit around 40 to 70 ms.

My spread is high but no faults elsewhere. Should I worry?

Not yet. Recheck in a month; a rising spread is the early warning.

Can I test the right button?

This page measures the left button. Use the home page for a quick right-button hold.

    Act on a poor result

    Sub-8 ms presses

Release bounce. Clean the switch; if it continues, replace it.

    Wide spread, no outliers

Likely your rhythm, not the switch. Run it again when relaxed.

    Spread grows over time

The switch is wearing. Plan a replacement before it starts double-clicking.
