Tilt the wheel left and right, then roll it up and down.
This mouse tilt wheel test counts all four scroll directions. Push the wheel left and right inside the box, then roll it up and down. Each direction has its own counter and the matching pad lights up, so a dead tilt switch shows immediately.

Some drivers map tilt to keyboard shortcuts instead of scroll events. Switch the mapping to horizontal scroll in the mouse software.
