Check your scroll direction

  1. 1. Scroll toward you

Pull the wheel or swipe fingers up three times.

  2. 2. Read the mode

Standard means the page moved down. Natural means it moved up, like dragging paper.

  3. 3. Change it if you want

Instructions for both systems are below.

Why this matters

Switchers get confused

Moving between Windows and macOS flips the default.

Mouse and trackpad can differ

macOS has one setting for both; Windows has separate ones.

Driver overrides

Some mouse software reverses the wheel independently of the OS.

Instant answer

No need to open a document and guess.

Direction terms

Natural scrolling
Content follows your finger, as on a phone. macOS default.
Standard scrolling
Scrolling toward you moves the page down. Windows default.
Reverse scrolling
Another name for natural scrolling on Windows and Linux.
Per-device setting
Windows and some Linux desktops allow different directions for mouse and touchpad.

Scroll direction questions

How do I make my mouse standard but keep the trackpad natural on a Mac?

macOS ties them together. Third-party tools such as Scroll Reverser separate them.

The result says mixed. Why?

You scrolled in both directions. Reset and scroll one way only.

Does this change anything?

No, it only detects. Change settings in your OS.

Change the direction

macOS

System Settings → Mouse (or Trackpad) → Natural scrolling toggle.

Windows 11

Settings → Bluetooth and devices → Mouse → Scroll direction; touchpad has its own setting under Touchpad.

Linux (GNOME)

Settings → Mouse and Touchpad → Natural Scrolling, per device.
